A special model project in terms of the energy transition was realized in the district of Landsberg am Lech at the beginning of 2021. Short-term generation peaks from the neighboring wind turbines, hydropower and PV systems are temporarily stored in the battery storage system. Longer-lasting surpluses are converted into thermal energy and heat a large heat storage tank which, together with regional biogas plants, supplies a local district heating network. If electrical energy is retrieved from the battery storage system, it can also be used to operate heat pumps in buildings that cannot be connected to the local heating network. This project integrates numerous energy systems in an exemplary manner to create cross-system sector coupling, making it a prime example of the regional energy transition.
