With SMAREG 4, we completed a project in 2022 that is particularly important to us. With a capacity of 60 MW, the plant was one of the largest battery storage facilities implemented in Europe at that time. The successful completion of the project was accompanied by the sales agreement with BCP Battery Holding, which further strengthened our solution portfolio in the field of large-scale energy storage.
Technical feature: Power adjustment in conjunction with the substation
SMAREG 4 stands out from other projects due to a specific technical requirement:
Due to the size and capacity of the storage facility, adjustments to the charging and discharging capacity must always take into account the status of the circuit breaker in the downstream substation.
This ensures that any change in output is harmoniously integrated into the grid situation. This special feature required precise adjustment of the control system for the plant—a process that was technically demanding and at the same time demonstrates the contribution that large storage facilities can make to grid stability.
Close coordination with the network operator
The corresponding control logic was developed in close consultation with the grid operator. This collaboration was essential in order to optimally implement the requirements and coordinate the plant both technically and operationally.
Cooperation with network operators is a key success factor, especially for projects of this magnitude—SMAREG 4 is a good example of this.
Conclusion
Even though the market has continued to grow since 2022 and larger projects have been added, SMAREG 4 remains an important milestone:
one of the largest storage facilities of its time, technically sophisticated in its implementation and developed in partnership with the grid operator.
